Day 4:

Well, the heat really made for a toasty time outside at recess! The kids were ready to come in as soon as the whistle blew.  : ) The kids got to meet our puppet friend Lionel the Lion yesterday when he came and taught us how to blend words.  The kids asked for him again today, but unfortunately, Lionel was unable to make his appointments.  But hopefully, Lionel will show up tomorrow to help us practice blending syllables once more!

We had our first fire alarm today and the kids thought it was exciting to be watching for Ms. Carter to jump out of her skin when the alarm went off.  We made it to specials (music) before the alarm, so the kids didn't get to laugh at Ms. Carter this time.  But next time, I'm sure they'll think it's hilarious.

The kids have really enjoyed our morning time together.  This is actually my favorite part of the day.  The kids are so bright and fresh, and they are so eager to learn.  We start off the morning by singing this song:

The kids really like singing this.

We also talk about the calendar and the days of the week.  We'll start talking about the weather next week.  We got to read our first pre-decodable book called See.  We read this yesterday and will start another book tomorrow.

This afternoon we read two books, one called Two Eggs Please, and another called We are the Same, We are different.  We listened to the stories and then talked about how we may look different on the outside, but we are the same inside.  The kids were eager to contribute to our discussion.

Here is the name graph we created with our names.  We read the book Chrysanthemum and then colored name cards for each one of us and put them on a graph.  We discovered that most of the students in our class have six letters in their name.  And we also discovered that Chrysanthemum has more letters in her name than anyone in our class!

We've spent the week also learning about the rules for our classroom.  Our class has been trying to get as many smiley faces as we can and we've been celebrating our successes with several "mighty oh, yeahs."
In 4 days, I can really tell a difference with the kids because of our practice with the rules.  Some of my little "impulsive movers" : ) who like to leave their chair often, have started raising their hand to ask permission to do what they need to do.  This has made for a more organized classroom.  I think it can only get better from here!

One more day to go!

Have a happy Thursday.

Two days to go first grade friends!!

I was so excited to meet all the new firsties at open house! I know we are going to have a terrific year.  Remember to get a good night's sleep on Sunday night.  Don't forget to use your confetti! : )

It's okay if you're nervous.  You might be a little scared at first, but we're going to have so much fun and learn lots of exciting things on the very first day.  So you won't be nervous or scared for very long!
